The bee shot became a scheduling problem

McConaughey was stung while working with bees shortly before production. He initially appeared to be fine. During the drive home, however, part of his face swelled and he noticed a severe loss of peripheral vision in one eye.

He later estimated that another reaction during production could have kept him off camera for roughly four or five days. The crew had a fairly practical answer: do not shoot the most dangerous material until they no longer needed his face for anything else.

So the scene with the largest concentration of bees moved to the final day.

There was no digital swarm waiting in post-production

The Rivals of Amziah King used live bees throughout its beekeeping material. Foxhound Bee Company, which served as the production's beekeeping consultant, says its team trained the actors, supplied and managed equipment and worked with the colonies on set rather than leaving the job to CGI or stunt doubles.

For McConaughey's major swarm shot, the actor held the queen in his fingers while the rest of the bees gradually clustered around her and along his bare arm. He said the process took about 40 minutes. With the scene also tied to the setting sun, there was effectively one opportunity to get the image Patterson wanted.

McConaughey made it through without another sting.

Five beekeepers were working behind the actors

Foxhound's involvement had started well before the cameras rolled. The Alabama company assembled a five-person beekeeping team after meeting with Patterson and the producers, then helped the cast learn how to move around colonies and handle the tools of the trade.

That work mattered because the script did not simply hide everyone behind full protective gear. Foxhound says several scenes were designed without the usual veils, suits or gloves, increasing the amount of preparation required from both the actors and the bee handlers.

Angelina LookingGlass, who plays Kateri, was stung seven times during production. Unlike McConaughey, she did not have the same allergic reaction and could continue working.

The allergy never forced production to stop

The precaution ultimately worked. McConaughey completed the final swarm sequence without being stung, despite spending the shot with thousands of live bees gathering around him.

The Rivals of Amziah King is directed by Andrew Patterson and stars McConaughey alongside Angelina LookingGlass and Kurt Russell. It opened in France under the title Oklahoma Honey on August 19, 2026.
